A Taste of Osaka's Okonomiyaki

>> Monday, February 4, 2008

Okonomiyaki is very famous especially in Osaka and Hiroshima. If you have the chance to visit Osaka, don't miss a bite of okonomiyaki. It is considered as the Japanese-style pancake or pizza. Main ingredients include: chopped cabbage and various toppings like thinly-sliced pork, red ginger, yakisoba noodles, tenkasu (tempura crumbs), green onion, squid, shrimp, and dried bonito flakes. In Hiroshima, the chopped cabbage is cooked on top of thinly spread butter. Here in Osaka, I haven't noticed the restaurant staff spreading butter on the iron table.

A friend brought me to this restaurant at *Yodobashi Camera. Usually, there's a lot of people waiting for a vacant table but it's really worth the wait. Okonomiyaki there is reasonably-priced (actually, it's cheap) and really delicious! Just look for this sign:

Here are the still raw okonomiyaki:

Already cooked...

* Umeda is one of Osaka's main commercial district.
* Yodobashi Camera is located near the JR, Midosuji, and Hankyu stations in Umeda. It is a very big shopping centre, mostly for electronics.
